About Alternatives to Violence Project - South Africa

Violence and conflict in South African schools is a serious problem. Failing to learn nonviolent ways of responding to conflict in early childhood can have a negative effect on the way those children respond to conflict/violence both in the present and as adults. Statistics and news reports suggest that level of crime and violence in schools is on the increase and that, if something is not done to tackle this worrying trend, things may get even worse. South Africa is a country only recently emerging from the oppression of Apartheid. Many South Africans, young and old, still suffer from its effects and from the damaging legacy it has left in its wake. Low self-esteem, racism and violence are all part of this legacy and are regularly found in its schools; among educators, parents and learners alike. The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) is a Grassroots, International, Volunteer Movement committed to reducing interpersonal difficulties in society.Founded in and developed from the real life experiences of participants, AVP encourages every person’s innate power to positively transform themselves and the world. AVP workshops present pre-emptive conflict management skills that can enable individuals to build successful interpersonal interactions, gain insights into themselves and find new and positive approaches to their lives. They provide experiences of respect for oneself and others; of speaking truth and listening with an open mind; of co-operation and the benefits of diversity. Those who have completed all levels of training become skilled and experienced leaders. Phaphama Initiatives has been running AVP workshops in schools, communities, work places and correctional facilities since 1995 and has seen excellent results. By tackling conflict holistically i.e. at the personal, interpersonal and community levels, Phaphama believes that the patterns of destructive behaviour that keep young people from achieving their full potential and from being positive role-models and leaders in their communities can be changed for the better.
