The hall was built by Joseph Gillott the manufacturer of pen nibs when he lived in Catherine de Barnes. Its purpose was to be used as a school and church. The building was taken over and managed by the Church. However the village had been maintaining the building for many years and when the church decided to sell the building, a team was put together who managed to persuade the church to hand over the management to a local board of trustees hence saving the hall for the village.
