About Cricket Without Boundaries

Cricket Without Boundaries ("CWB") is a UK-based charity dedicated to improving and developing underprivileged communities and the personal skills of their people, addressing matters from basic teamwork to self-discipline and leadership. A primary focus is the promotion of safe behaviours in order to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS. While volunteers and operations are currently entirely UK-based, CWB’s groundwork takes place in sub-Saharan Africa - an area with over 22 million HIV/AIDS sufferers. CWB undertakes projects in four countries in the region, with the annual aim of delivering not less than 3 such projects in each of spring and autumn. Each project involves CWB providing 7-10 cricket coaches coaching children from underprivileged and high-risk areas and delivering an internationally-recognised coaching qualification for teachers and other adults, as well as organising tournaments for schools and leaving necessary equipment to encourage continued development of the sport in the community. CWB’s training sessions involve discussions and practical demonstrations dealing with HIV/AIDS, both in terms of prevention and treatment, with key messages relayed throughout the sessions. All CWB-trained coaches are encouraged to continue to incorporate these messages in their future work. CWB stands for equality of treatment for those with and without the disease. Children and adults - regardless of their status - are included in coaching, games and competitions. Trainee coaches are empowered to confidently inform participating children of the dangers of HIV/AIDS through innovative associations with the language and form of cricket. CWB is a pioneering charity in the field of cricket in the manner in which it combines the sport with HIV/AIDS awareness. Since 2005, CWB has trained over 1,700 youth and adult cricket coaches, leaving them with International Cricket Council qualifications, as well as coaching more than 20,000 children. The focus on training and empowerment of local coaches enables the CWB work and message to be sustained and spread even during periods when CWB project teams are not in the relevant country.
