In the UK all children have the given right to free education until the age of 18. It is only after this age, should they wish to continue their education, that fees will be applied and paid for by either parents, grants or student loans. In Gambia all parents must pay for their children's education regardless of background and financial status. The Hope Nursery School was founded in 1998 with the aim of providing affordable and ultimately free education for pupils from most disadvantaged families. Most of the pupils come from single parents and polygamous homes where education of the children is a burden to the carers. In July 2000, after a heavy rainstorm, the school building collapsed and the water caused extensive damages to the building structure and other school assets such as furniture, books and toys. Due to the lack of support from the Ministry of Education, the building was not reconstructed and the nursery had to relocate. Currently the classes take place in a makeshift space until the sufficient funds are collected to buy the land and build a three-classroom school.
