The Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum is the only museum located on the actual site of a former ironstone mine. Loftus Mine was worked from 1865 to 1958 and was the third largest in Cleveland. In the late Victorian & Edwardian eras, Cleveland was the most important iron producing district in Great Britain, responsible for between ¼ and ⅓ of total production. Visitors to the Museum are given a fully guided tour including a short foray underground into one of the Mine's original haulage drifts.
